THE CUTS

For the past two years Birgit Hölmer site-specific interventions have been taking place in empty shop windows in Berlin. The artist creates the ephemeral artworks using leftover sticky strips sourced from printing shops, which would normally be thrown away. She composes the strips into sublime abstract forms on the outside of the abandoned shop windows normally without asking for permission. Moreover, her methodology in the “Cuts” series implies a critique on the wave of gentrification many areas of Berlin are currently experiencing.
Birgit Hölmer’s interventions are of great variation; circular structures are in focus, often with a hole in the centre, suggesting fractures on the glass window. In Kapitel 11 reagiert Birgit Hölmer unmittelbar auf das Öffnen der seit über 20 Jahren mit Holzbrettern verrammelten Fensterfronten des Pförtnerhauses. Der nun freigelegte Blick ins Innere offenbart dem Betrachter die Spuren der Zeit aber auch den jahrelangen inneren Verfall. Für die erste künstlerische Intervention im und mit CNTRM wird uns Birgit Hölmer jedoch die klare Sicht und somit die Fokussierung auf das Innere erschweren. Hölmer dockt mit ihrer Arbeit an die bereits hergerichtete Glasfassade von Außen an, als wolle sie diesen Zustand feierlich bewerben. Genau aus dieser Branche kommt nämlich das von ihr verwendete Materie für ihre Arbeit. Dies Reststreifen die beim Zurechtschneiden von Werbeaufkleber-Bögen in einer Druckerei anfallen und eigentlich im Abfall landen, verwendet sie für CUTS auf Glas. Diese CUTS changieren dabei farbenfroh zwischen einer Leichtigkeit und einer akribisch-geometrischen Anordnung.

Mit Kapitel 12 wurde der Pförtner-Pavillon nach über 20 Jahren wieder geöffnet und es beginnt der Prozess der Erneuerung und des Sichtbarwerdens. Die geplante Renovierung wird mit Kapitel 1 im Oktober 2018 abgeschlossen werden und dann den Eindruck vermitteln, wie das Pförtnerhaus vor 40 Jahren ausgesehen hat. Parallel hierzu entwirft CNTRM mit eingeladenen Künstler*innen einen zweiten Handlungsstrang, der als Hauptakt (Kapitel 11 - 2) aus zehn Ausstellungen besteht.

In Chapter 11, Birgit Hölmer reacts directly to the opening of the guardhouses window fronts, which have been cluttered with wooden boards for more than 20 years. The now uncovered view into the interior reveals the traces of time as well as the inner decay to the viewer. For this first artistic intervention in and with CNTRM, Birgit Hölmer doesn`t allow a clear view and thus a focus on the interior. Hölmer docks on the already prepared glass facade from the outside, as if she wanted to solemnly promote this state. The material she uses for her work precisely comes from this industry. The leftover strips, which are produced when trimming advertising leaflets in a print shop and usually are treated as waste, are used for her CUTS on glass. These CUTS change colorfully between a lightness and a meticulous-geometric arrangement..

With Chapter 12, the guardhouse reopened after 20 years and started the process of renewal and visualization. The planned renovation will conclude with Chapter 1 in October 2018 and then reveal the impression of what the gatehouse looked like 40 years ago. At the same time, CNTRM is aiming at a second story-line with invited artists, which consists of ten exhibitions as the main act (chapters 11 - 2).
